Upcoming: Specially-Made Rice for Diabetics

Scientists at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) are making significant progress in developing ultra-low glycemic index (GI) rice, offering hope to Filipino rice lovers concerned about their blood sugar levels. The new varieties are expected to be released to farmers next year after undergoing successful trials in over 10 provinces nationwide. President Marcos has endorsed the low and ultra-low GI rice varieties, noting their potential to improve nutrition intake.

These new rice varieties are seen as a healthier alternative to commercially available white rice, which typically has high GI levels that can increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes. IRRI researchers have found that their ultra-low GI rice can have a GI as low as 25, compared to the GI levels of 70-72 found in most rice varieties on the market.

In addition to benefiting individuals with diabetes, the ultra-low GI rice varieties also contain high protein content, which can aid in muscle growth and brain activity. Researchers are even working on developing a low or ultra-low GI version of the popular Dinorado rice variety to make it more appealing to consumers.

Despite these scientific advancements, the cost to farmers and the retail price of the low and ultra-low GI rice varieties are expected to remain the same as current market prices. This news is expected to be well-received by the $3.12 billion low GI rice market, which is projected to grow annually by five percent.

With the potential health benefits and market opportunities presented by these new rice varieties, IRRI scientists are optimistic about the future impact of their research on Filipino consumers and farmers alike.
