The Unconventional Practice That Transformed Pit Stops

Gas stations in the 1980s were mainly used for refueling cars and car maintenance services. However, Shell Magallanes stood out from the rest. Established by Mario C. Cruz and his wife Nena Magdalena Cruz after retiring from Pilipinas Shell Co. in 1984, their vision was to create a one-stop-and-go service station for travelers heading south on the expressway. It became the first self-serve gas station on the expressway, offering not only car services but also clean toilets, free air, and water service.

Nena also wanted to create a gathering place, so she opened a convenience store called Bad Habit at the station. This convenience store offered imported items, which were difficult to find at the time. Imported goods such as blue seal cigarettes, imported chocolates, and Crest toothpaste were available at Bad Habit. The store became popular, attracting even celebrities like Rio Locsin, Sharon Cuneta, Jim Paredes, and Monique Wilson.

The concept of a convenience store at gas stations soon spread nationwide, with the opening of Select and other convenience stores. However, Shell Select in Magallanes remains special because of its iconic chocolate cake, Polly’s Chocolate Cake, loved by families for decades. The store also offers other gourmet items like Cynthia’s Kitchen bottled aligue, Nanay Luisa’s queso de bola spread, Ternura ensaimada from Baguio, Granda’s sylvanas, Sonsi longganisa, La Reina pork chorizo, and Balay Dako piaya. Kiosks like Turks, Potato Corner, and Gongcha are also available for customers to enjoy their meals right at Select Magallanes.

Nena Magdalena Cruz’s vision of transforming a simple gas station into a wonderful gathering place has left a lasting impact in the industry. Visitors can now indulge in Polly’s chocolate cake and coffee before or after visiting St. Alphonsus, creating a unique experience at Shell Select Magallanes.
