Israel pays tribute to Ople, OFWs through theater performance

In a heartfelt tribute to the late Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) secretary Susan “Toots” Ople, as well as the thousands of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) worldwide, Israel presented a captivating theater performance in Manila.

The Israeli Embassy in Manila collaborated with renowned Israeli improvisation group Duda to pay homage to Ople and the 30,000 Filipino caregivers and hotel workers employed in Israel.

Improv, a form of live theater where the storyline, characters, and dialogues are spontaneously created by performers, became the medium through which these remarkable individuals and their stories were showcased.

Before the performance on September 8, members of Duda conducted interviews with a number of OFWs working in Israel, seeking inspiration from their experiences to incorporate into the show.

Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Ilan Fluss expressed his admiration for Secretary Ople, stating, “Secretary Ople’s life was dedicated to advocating for OFWs. In my close collaboration with her, I had the privilege of witnessing her unwavering commitment and compassionate leadership.”

Fluss further highlighted Ople’s unique combination of pragmatism and empathy, noting that it made her an influential advocate for OFWs. He added, “Together, we faced numerous challenges, driven by our shared commitment to enhance the lives of these unsung heroes. Her legacy of compassion, justice, and solidarity continues to inspire us all.”

Recognizing the significant contributions made by OFWs in Israel, Fluss commended their hard work, compassion, and world-class care. He assured that the Israeli government is actively collaborating with the Philippines and the Department of Migrant Workers to protect and respect the rights of these workers.

According to the Israeli Embassy in Manila, OFWs in Israel receive comprehensive benefits, including medical insurance, a pension fund, annual leave with pay, and all social rights guaranteed by Israeli labor regulations. The embassy emphasized that the labor market in Israel is strictly regulated to safeguard employee rights.

The theater performance stands as a poignant reminder of the enduring bond between Israel and the Philippines, underlining their mutual commitment to supporting and championing the welfare of overseas workers.
