Tragic Accident: Cyclist Killed by Passenger Bus in Manila

A cyclist tragically lost his life after being hit and run over by a passenger bus in Sampaloc, Manila on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 24. The victim was identified as Russel Tapayan, 33, a resident of Barangay Culliat, Quezon City.

According to the Manila Police District (MPD) Vehicular Traffic Investigation Section (VTIS), the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. when Tapayan was traveling along the eastbound lane of Lerma Street in Sampaloc. The police report stated that the back portion of Tapayan’s bicycle was hit by a bus driven by Are Jay De Castro near R. Papa Street. The bus then tragically ran over and dragged Tapayan for several meters, resulting in his immediate death.

The bus driver, De Castro, is currently in custody at the University Belt Area Police Community Precinct (UBA PCP) and will face charges of homicide with damage to property. Authorities are still conducting further investigation into the deadly accident.
