April 29-30: Public Schools Implementing Distance Learning Amid Extreme Heat and Transport Strike

Public schools in the Philippines will be implementing distance learning on Monday and Tuesday in response to extreme heat and a nationwide transport strike. The Department of Education (DepEd) made the announcement citing the latest heat index forecast from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the upcoming transport strike.

Asynchronous classes or distance learning will be conducted on April 29 and 30, 2024, with teaching and non-teaching personnel not required to report to their stations. Regional and Schools Division Offices can proceed with activities like the Regional Athletic Association Meets, as long as safety measures are in place for all participants.

Private schools are not covered by DepEd’s advisory but are encouraged to implement similar measures. The move comes as the country grapples with extreme heat conditions expected to persist until mid-May, attributed to El Niño and climate change.

Transport group PISTON will be staging a three-day nationwide strike from April 29 to May 1 in protest of the public utility vehicle modernization program consolidation deadline.
