DENR urges Filipinos to take action in reversing damages on Earth

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has called on Filipinos to play their part in addressing the environmental challenges caused by human activities over the past 300,000 years.

Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga made this appeal on Saturday as the World-Wide Fund for Nature — Philippines (WWF Philippines) encourages everyone to participate in Earth Hour by switching off non-essential lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. as a response to global warming and climate change.

“While global discussions on climate resilience are ongoing, we must acknowledge the urgency of the planetary crisis,” said Loyzaga.

She emphasized the importance of Earth Hour in reminding people about the consequences of current human actions and the potential for change.

Despite advancements in technology and exploration, Loyzaga expressed disappointment in humanity’s inability to curb fossil fuel consumption and prevent plastic pollution in oceans.

The DENR is determined to make this year’s Earth Hour the largest yet, following last year’s event, which saw over 410,000 hours of support from individuals in more than 190 countries and territories.

In support of WWF Philippines, the DENR has reaffirmed its commitment to Earth Hour 2023 with the theme “Switch Off Plastic Pollution, Switch On Nature.”

Loyzaga stressed the need for collaborative efforts from all sectors to address this complex challenge and prevent further environmental degradation.

The Department of Health also voiced its support for Earth Hour, with Manila City chosen as the main partner and venue for this year’s event launch. Iconic landmarks in the city will turn off non-essential lights for an hour to demonstrate solidarity with efforts to conserve energy.

Other local government units, including Makati, Baguio, Catbalogan, Ormoc, San Carlos, San Fernando, Santa Rosa, Tagum, Zamboanga City, and Pilar Siargao, have also committed to participating in Earth Hour activities.

Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa encouraged Filipinos to join the initiative by turning off non-essential lights, emphasizing the importance of promoting a healthy environment for the well-being of everyone.

The joint efforts of DENR, WWF Philippines, and various government agencies aim to raise awareness and inspire action to protect the environment and ensure a sustainable future for all.
