Collaboration between Philippines and Australia Strengthened in Maritime Security and Cyber Technology

In a move to strengthen their civil and defense maritime commitments, the Philippines and Australia have signed agreements on Thursday. The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at enhancing maritime cooperation, focusing on areas such as civil maritime security, marine environment protection, and maritime domain awareness. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. stated that defense and security are vital areas of cooperation and expressed eagerness to expand joint activities. Additionally, both nations have agreed to collaborate on cyber and critical technology, as well as competition law and policy.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a $20-million investment to support reforms in the Philippines’ justice system. The upgrade of bilateral ties to a strategic partnership in September 2023 further solidified the cooperation between Manila and Canberra amidst regional security challenges.

The South China Sea, claimed by the Philippines, holds strategic importance as a key transport route for various goods. Marcos will be returning to Australia for the Australia-ASEAN Special Summit following his international travels to Brunei and Vietnam. The aim of these agreements is to build a peaceful region where international law is respected, and waterways remain open for trade.
