Six Philippine conglomerates have been recognized as some of the world’s best companies by TIME Magazine and analytics partner Statista. The companies that made it to the list are PLDT, Ayala Corp., San Miguel Corp., BDO Unibank, Metrobank, and Jollibee Foods Corp.

The inaugural list of the world’s best companies was compiled based on a formula that took into account revenue growth, employee satisfaction surveys, and rigorous environmental, social, and corporate governance data. The top four positions on the list were occupied by American tech giants Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet (which owns Google), and Meta Platforms (Facebook).

PLDT, one of the Philippine conglomerates on the list, expressed pride in being named one of the world’s best companies. PLDT and Smart Communications President and CEO Alfredo S. Panlilio stated, “It is a great honor for PLDT to be named one of the world’s best companies, and to be the only Philippine telco on the list. This recognition affirms our strategic direction and inspires us to continue doing business responsibly, elevating customer experience, achieving operational excellence and new areas of growth, and making our company the best place to work.”

Panlilio emphasized that sustainability is one of the key pillars of PLDT’s strategy. The company includes sustainability in its CEO scorecard and has formulated ESG-focused key performance indicators across its units and functions. PLDT has released its 2022 Sustainability Report aligning with the Global Reporting Initiative framework and is also a registered participant of the United Nations Global Compact.

In addition to its sustainability efforts, PLDT has announced a decarbonization roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030. The company is aligned with climate reporting standards set by CDP and is a supporter of the Task Force for Climate-related Financial Disclosures in the Philippines. PLDT also upholds a board diversity policy to foster effective decision-making and governance.

PLDT has consistently demonstrated an upward trend in revenues since 2020, with total revenues reaching over 205 billion pesos in 2022, representing a 6% increase from the previous year. The company has also embarked on an organizational transformation journey to create a work environment where employees thrive.

This recognition comes on the heels of PLDT being named the Philippines’ most valuable brand by Brand Finance, with a valuation of $2.6 billion. Furthermore, the company was recognized for having the highest Sustainability Perceptions Value among all listed brands at $222 million.
