Rachel Alejandro discusses the continued stereotyping challenges in Hollywood

New York-Based Singer-Actress Turns Down TV Series Offer to Pursue Acting Opportunities in the US

Renowned singer-actress Rachel Alejandro recently revealed that she declined an offer to be part of the romantic-comedy series “Can’t Buy Me Love” to focus on her budding acting career in the United States. In an interview with Inquirer Entertainment, Rachel shared her decision to create space for potential opportunities as a newcomer in the US acting scene.

Rachel, who has been in Manila for a month for performances, including a show with her father, Hajji Alejandro, emphasized the need to prioritize her commitments in the US, where her husband works. Despite enjoying her time on the show “A Broken Marriage Vow,” she opted to forego the long-term commitment of a teleserye to pursue new ventures.

The pandemic prompted Rachel to spend 10 months in New York, where she grew fond of the city and found work opportunities. Her relocation to the US led to various acting prospects, including auditions for pilot TV shows in Hollywood. Rachel expressed her enthusiasm for exploring acting opportunities in the US entertainment industry, particularly as production resumes post-strike.

However, Rachel highlighted the challenges faced by Asian actors in Hollywood, noting that roles for Filipinos are still stereotyped. While the industry has seen progress in Asian representation, Rachel emphasized the need for diverse and authentic Filipino roles in mainstream media.

Despite the slow pace of work, Rachel remains optimistic about her acting journey in Hollywood. As a member of the Screen Actors’ Guild, she navigates the industry’s nuances and embraces various opportunities, including commercials and print ads. With the recent Writers Guild of America strike affecting the industry, Rachel hopes for more acting opportunities in the coming months.

Rachel’s dedication to her craft extends to the Philippine concert scene in the US, where she participates in various shows alongside fellow Filipino artists. As she continues to explore her acting career, Rachel’s commitment to honing her skills and seizing new opportunities reflects her passion for the craft.

The article also mentions Rachel’s involvement in the upcoming concert “Awit ng Panahon: Noon at Ngayon,” featuring esteemed Filipino artists and directed by Ferdi Aguas. Produced by Pro-Entertainment Production, Avolution, and Mallillins Music Production, the concert promises to showcase a diverse range of musical talents from the Philippines.
