Philippines and China not in talks to ease tensions in West Philippine Sea

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) expressed doubts about the possibility of talks between the Philippines and China unless Beijing demonstrates sincerity and responsibility, refraining from actions that endanger personnel and vessels’ safety.

Efforts have been made by the DFA to create a conducive environment for dialogue and consultation with China on the South China Sea issue. However, the DFA highlighted the importance of China’s actions matching its words, especially in the waters.

The Philippines strongly condemned China’s “illegal and aggressive” behavior in Ayungin Shoal, which resulted in endangering Philippine Navy personnel’s lives and damaging vessels during a humanitarian mission to BRP Sierra Madre.

The DFA reiterated the call for China to adhere to international law, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 Arbitral Award, and to respect the Philippines’ sovereignty and jurisdiction in its waters.

In response to the incident, Philippine Coast Guard officials likened China’s actions to piracy, emphasizing the need for accountability for the damage caused and the weapons seized by Chinese authorities.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Navy deployed the BRP Laurence Narag, a missile-equipped patrol gunboat, in the southern Philippines following the monitoring of Chinese warships passing through certain sea lanes without coordination.

The AFP chief suggested that conflict between the Philippines and China is likely due to territorial disputes and the proximity to Taiwan, raising concerns about external threats and the need to be prepared.

Various lawmakers and activist groups called for justice and reparations for the injured Filipino Navy sailors and denounced China’s unilateral enforcement of rules in disputed territories, urging the government to seek support from neighboring countries in upholding international law.

The recent incidents have heightened tensions between the two countries, emphasizing the need for diplomatic efforts and adherence to international law to avoid further escalation in the region.
