AboitizPower boosts renewable energy capacity by more than 200 MW to ease supply constraints

AboitizPower has added over 200 MW of renewable energy capacity to help alleviate tight power supply conditions in the Philippines. The company’s renewable energy arm, ARI, recently included the 159 MWp Laoag Solar Power Plant in Pangasinan to provide additional capacity and minimize grid strain.

This addition comes as the country faced yellow and red alerts in its main grids due to forced outages of power plants and increasing power demand. Yellow alerts indicate insufficient operating margins, while red alerts signify inadequate power supply to meet demand.

ARI President Jimmy Villaroman emphasized the contribution of the Laoag and Cayanga-Bugallon solar power plants, totaling about 200 MW of sellable capacity, in providing much-needed electricity. He also highlighted the company’s commitment to utilizing non-arable land for solar fields to support farmers and the agricultural economy.

Future projects include the Tiwi Binary Geothermal Power Plant and the Magat battery energy storage system, both aimed at augmenting supply in the Luzon grid.

AboitizPower aims to build 3,700 MW of new renewable energy capacity aligned with the Philippine government’s goal of achieving a 35% renewable energy share in the energy mix by 2030 and 50% by 2040. Their expansion plans include projects in solar, wind, geothermal, and hydro energy sources.
