Marcos appoints former CA justice Sadang as new PCGG chief

A former magistrate of the Court of Appeals (CA) has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Presidential Commission on Good Governance (PCGG).

In a recent announcement, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. named former CA Associate Justice Melchor Quirino Sadang to lead the agency responsible for recovering the ill-gotten wealth of the Marcos family.

Sadang, who retired from the CA in 2017, takes over from John Agbayani at the PCGG. He is the fifth appointee and the second justice from the appellate court chosen by Marcos for the agency.

Earlier this year, Sadang was part of a panel tasked with reviewing the courtesy resignations of numerous police officers in a bid to cleanse the ranks of the Philippine National Police.

The PCGG was formed after the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution ousted late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and his family from power. The agency’s primary goal is to retrieve the wealth stolen by the Marcos family and their associates during their rule, returning it to the national treasury. The PCGG operates as an attached agency of the DOJ.

Since its establishment, the PCGG has successfully recovered P174.2 billion from the Marcos’ ill-gotten wealth, benefitting the Filipino people.
