Grace period for e-trike penalties mandated by Marcos

President Marcos has announced the suspension of penalties for one month on e-bikes, e-trikes, and other vehicles prohibited from using national roads. This decision aims to give drivers more time to adjust to the new policy, as the P2,500 fine is seen as a significant burden for them. However, it is important to note that these vehicles are still restricted on certain national roads under MMDA Regulation No. 24-022 Series of 2024.

During this grace period, no tickets, penalties, or impoundment of e-trikes will be issued. If drivers are caught violating the rules, they will be informed about the permissible roads and new regulations focused on promoting road safety and order. The ban, which began on April 15, applies to various types of e-vehicles on 19 Metro Manila roads.

Despite the temporary suspension of penalties, confusion and excuses arose among motorists on the second day of the crackdown on light vehicles in Metro Manila. MMDA personnel towed several e-trikes parked in prohibited areas, leading to confrontations with the owners. Some e-trike drivers also tried to avoid penalties by claiming agreements with the city government, but the MMDA remained firm in enforcing the policy.

In a related development, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan halted the implementation of City Ordinance No. 8998, which included motorcycles in the list of vehicles to be clamped for parking violations on restricted areas. This decision came after complaints about enforcement lapses, prompting the city government to review the situation. Mayor Lacuna-Pangan also cautioned residents against relying on unofficial social media posts for information.
