Gilas Pilipinas Women fell short in their opening game at the 42nd Jones Cup, losing 89-85 to Chinese-Taipei A. Despite a slow start, the Philippines rallied and tied the game at 83-all with a minute left on the clock.
However, a missed free throw by Afril Bernardino gave Chinese-Taipei A the opportunity they needed to secure the victory. Janine Pontejos led Gilas Pilipinas Women with 19 points, while Kacey dela Rosa contributed 17 points and seven rebounds.
Jack Danielle Animam and Jhaz Joson both added 13 points. The team will have a quick turnaround as they face Iran on Sunday afternoon.
