Educators embrace reconciled bill for increased allowances

Teachers group welcomes bill increasing teaching allowance for public school teachers

Teachers groups Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) and Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) expressed their support for a reconciled bill by the Senate and the House of Representatives that aims to gradually increase the teaching allowance of public school teachers starting in the school year 2025-2026.

One of the key provisions of the reconciled bill is the gradual increase in the teaching allowance from the current P5,000 to P10,000 per teacher for the school year 2025-2026 and beyond.

In a press statement, the groups mentioned that this achievement is a significant step forward in prioritizing the welfare and support of public school teachers. They mentioned that the bill is a result of the efforts of public school teachers through lobbying and collective actions.

The groups called on President Marcos not to veto the bill when it reaches his office. They emphasized the importance of upholding the rights and well-being of educators.

While the TDC finds the P10,000 teaching allowance to be small, they still consider the passage of the bill to be a welcome development. They vowed to monitor the situation closely and prevent any potential veto.

The TDC also stressed that the P10,000 teaching allowance should be tax-free. TDC national chairman Benjo Basas expressed happiness over the collaborative effort between teachers and lawmakers in achieving this milestone.
