Valencia City Honors Pulangi River with Spectacular Inaugural Gakit Festival

Gakit Festival

Valencia City, known for its rich cultural heritage, paid tribute to the Pulangi River in a dazzling display of color and creativity during the inaugural Gakit Festival held on July 12, 2023. The picturesque Pulangi River served as the magnificent backdrop for the procession of vibrant bamboo rafts, affectionately called gakits, which gracefully floated along the river’s waters.

The Gakit Festival was a grand celebration that not only commemorated the city’s socio-economic origins but also highlighted the indispensable role played by the Pulangi River in facilitating trade and fostering community connections. Guided by the theme “Balik Lantaw. Panagtigum. Pagpasalamat” (Looking Back. Gathering. Gratitude), the festival provided a platform for local residents to showcase their artistic prowess by constructing resilient and visually captivating gakits.

The significance of the event was further elevated by the presence of esteemed guests, including Marie Elaine Unchuan, the Director of the Department of Tourism in Region 10 (DOT-10). Director Unchuan, serving as a guest speaker, expressed heartfelt support on behalf of the regional office for this groundbreaking festival. Additionally, Juan Carlos Valentino Baclig, the Tourism Operations Officer, served as a judge for the highly anticipated Gakit Parade Competition.

As the Gakit Festival concluded its inaugural edition, Valencia City eagerly anticipates the future iterations of this grand celebration. The event has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the city’s cultural landscape and is poised to become a cherished tradition in the years to come.
