Ginebra dominates Tolentino-less NorthPort, sets up semifinal showdown with SMB

Barangay Ginebra Dominates NorthPort, Advances to Semifinals

In a convincing 106-93 victory, Barangay Ginebra proved to be too much for NorthPort in the quarterfinals of the 2023-’24 PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the PhilSports Arena on Friday, Jan. 19. The absence of Arvin Tolentino didn’t stop Ginebra from dominating the game and securing their spot in the semifinals.

Tony Bishop led the charge for Ginebra with a double-double of 29 points and 13 rebounds, while Jamie Malonzo contributed 21 points and seven rebounds. Christian Standhardinger, the best player of the conference frontrunner, tallied 18 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, and two blocks. Maverick Ahanmisi added 16 points, and Scottie Thompson provided 10 assists and seven rebounds.

Despite the absence of Tolentino, NorthPort attempted to rally in the second half behind the efforts of JM Calma, Joshua Munzon, and import Venky Jois. Calma scored 16 of his 19 points in the final frame, Munzon contributed 19 points, and Jois had a triple-double of 18 points, 14 rebounds, and 13 assists.

However, NorthPort couldn’t overcome the lead that Ginebra had established, ultimately falling short in their comeback attempts.

The Kings will now proceed to face the San Miguel Beermen in a highly anticipated semifinal showdown.
