Gilas Pilipinas U18 girls are set to showcase their talents on the continental stage, following in the footsteps of the U16 team’s success in achieving a Division A promotion last year. The team will be competing in the FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Championship Division B from June 24-30 in Shenzhen, China.
According to Gilas women program director, the goal is to secure a promotion to the U18 Division A, building on the momentum from the U16 team’s achievement. The team earned their spot in the Division B tournament by sweeping the SEABA Qualifiers in Thailand, dominating their opponents with an impressive winning margin average of 37.6 points.
Preparations for the upcoming tournament will kick off next week at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig, with tune-up games against collegiate teams scheduled before their departure for China. In the Asia Cup Division B, Gilas U18 will face tough competition from teams like Lebanon, Maldives, and Syria in Group B.
With only the champion team earning promotion to Division A, the pressure is on for Gilas to perform at their best. The team is determined to make adjustments and improve upon their third-place finish in the previous edition. Last year, the Gilas U16 girls secured a Division A ticket after defeating Iran in the finals with a convincing 83-60 victory.
