Philippines’ Leading Finance App Introduces Green Transaction Alerts

GCash, the Philippines’ leading finance app and largest cashless ecosystem, has rolled out its latest update, Green Transaction Alerts. This new feature allows users to track the grams of carbon they have saved by digitally sending money and making bank transfers.

The aim of Green Transaction Alerts is to emphasize GCash’s dedication to sustainability. In 2019, GCash collaborated with the China Beijing Environmental Exchange to calculate the carbon emissions saved by transitioning from manual transactions to digital ones. By utilizing the same calculations and metrics, users can now visualize their reduction in carbon emissions through digital transactions. This reduction is achieved when users opt for digital transactions over manual ones, thus avoiding the consumption of paper, plastic, electricity, and transportation.

CJ Alegre, GCash Sustainability Head, highlighted the app’s commitment to sustainability by stating, “Sustainability is embedded in the way GCash conducts its business, and we’ve provided ways for our users to see how their actions on the app also contribute to environment-friendly actions that ultimately protect our planet and contribute to a greener future.”

Green Transaction Alerts complement other sustainability features within the app, such as GForest, an award-winning initiative that lets users participate in reforestation efforts through gamification. To date, GCash has planted a total of 2.7 million trees as a result of users’ digital transactions.

Alegre further added, “We continue to look for ways to become an even more sustainable company, and more importantly, to provide avenues for Filipinos to take action for the planet. This is only the beginning as we gradually make these alerts available for other transactions in the coming months. By combining technology with innovation and creativity, we hope to instill a habit in Filipinos to consciously make a positive impact with every simple digital transaction they make.”
