Canlaon and La Castellana in Negros Declare State of Calamity After Kanlaon Volcano Eruption

The city of Canlaon in Negros Oriental and the municipality of La Castellana in Negros Occidental have declared a state of calamity following the recent phreatic eruption of Kanlaon Volcano. La Castellana Mayor Alme Rhumyla Mangilimutan confirmed the flow of lahar in Barangay Biak na Bato, rendering roads impassable due to debris carried by the mudflow.

Residents have been urged to remain calm and avoid the path of the lahar flows, with forced evacuations taking place in the affected barangay. Farmlands in six barangays at the foot of the volcano have been covered with ashfall, affecting a total of 232 families currently staying in evacuation centers.

Meanwhile, Canlaon City Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas suspended work in government and private offices to ensure the safety of residents within the danger zone. Despite the situation returning to normal in the city, caution is still being advised.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with various agencies providing assistance to the affected residents. The Office of Civil Defense and the Philippine Red Cross have mobilized resources to provide humanitarian aid and assess the damage caused by the eruption. The Department of Agriculture is also assessing the impact on the agriculture sector and ensuring support for affected farmers.

As the region remains on high alert for possible future volcanic activity, the safety and well-being of residents remain a top priority for local authorities and responding agencies.
