Burauen City in Leyte unveils renovated park honoring Marcos’ grand uncle

In an effort to preserve and promote cultural heritage, the municipal government of Burauen in Leyte recently opened a refurbished park named after Norberto Romualdez Sr., the grand uncle of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The park, located at the town center of Burauen, was inaugurated by Mayor Juanito Renomeron. The initiative signifies the local government’s commitment to honoring distinguished individuals from Burauen’s history.

According to Carmela Corazon Crebillo, the municipal tourism officer, the park covers 177 square meters and features a pavilion, concrete benches, and a pathway. It was originally built in 1975 to celebrate Romualdez’s 100th birthday and now includes a monument dedicated to him.

Norberto Romualdez Sr., born in Burauen in 1875, was recognized for his contributions as an educator, jurist, writer, and statesman. He played a significant role in promoting the Waray-Waray language and was involved in drafting the 1935 Constitution for the Philippine Commonwealth.

The park restoration project, which cost P500,000, was completed on June 8 this year. Romualdez passed away in 1941 at the age of 66 in Northern Samar.
