PAGASA: Weakened habagat causing hot and humid weather

Hot and humid weather continues as southwest monsoon weakens

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported yesterday that the southwest monsoon, known as Habagat, has weakened as hot and humid weather persists in the country.

According to PAGASA weather specialist Daniel James Villamil, many areas, including Metro Manila, will experience generally fair weather. Villamil noted that while the entire country will continue to experience hot and humid conditions, the likelihood of sustained rains has decreased.

Areas most affected by the southwest monsoon include the western section of Southern Luzon and Visayas, particularly Mimaropa, Western Visayas, and Batangas. Villamil also mentioned that no low-pressure area or typhoon has been monitored within or outside the Philippine area of responsibility.

Additionally, thunderstorm activities were experienced in some areas in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and Calabarzon. PAGASA warned that at least 38 areas in the country could experience a “danger level” heat index between 42 and 46 degrees Celsius, with Echague, Isabela, and Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City expected to feel the highest heat index.

Meanwhile, the water level of Angat Dam decreased slightly, reaching 177.39 meters compared to its previous level of 177.56 meters. The dam currently sits 32.61 meters below its normal high water level of 210 meters and 2.61 meters below its minimum operating level of 180 meters. Angat Dam plays a crucial role in supplying more than 90 percent of Metro Manila’s potable water needs and providing irrigation for 25,000 hectares of farmlands in Bulacan and Pampanga.
