New documentary offers a glimpse into the life of designer Diane Von Furstenberg

A new documentary delves into the life of renowned designer Diane Von Furstenberg. Released on June 25 and now streaming on Disney+, the 90-minute film provides a glimpse into the remarkable life of the Belgian designer known as DVF.

Directed by Trish Dalton and Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the documentary combines new and existing interviews with old photos to create a scrapbook-style narrative. Titled “Diane Von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge,” the film stands out from other fashion documentaries by focusing on a living subject who can actively participate in how her life is portrayed on screen.

Throughout the documentary, Von Furstenberg candidly discusses her life, including her marriage to German prince Egon Von Furstenberg at a young age and her subsequent divorce. She credits her mother, Lily Nahmias, for instilling in her a sense of fearlessness and independence, drawing on her mother’s survival of Nazi death camps during World War II.

Von Furstenberg’s famous wrap dress, inspired by wraparound tops worn by ballerinas, is highlighted in the film as a groundbreaking fashion innovation that continues to be popular today. The documentary also touches on Obaid-Chinoy’s own journey as a filmmaker, from her early days as an investigative reporter to her transition to storytelling through film.

Through personal anecdotes and insights, “Diane Von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge” offers a unique perspective on the life and career of a pioneering designer.
