Lawmaker calls for enhanced toll road services before approving rate increases

A senator has urged the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) to ensure that operators of the country’s major toll roads improve their services before approving any further rate increases.

Last week, the TRB gave the green light for the second phase of toll rate hikes on the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), with the new rates set to be implemented on June 4.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian emphasized the importance of any rate adjustment leading to better service standards and a more pleasant experience for motorists.

Gatchalian pointed out the need for toll road operators to address issues such as the malfunctioning cashless payment system and alleviate traffic congestion before pushing through with any rate hikes.

He highlighted the persistent problem of traffic bottlenecks near toll booths and the unreliability of cashless payment systems on major toll roads, which contribute to congestion in certain areas.

Gatchalian also noted that motorists have been vocal about the subpar services provided by NLEX, particularly citing complaints about faulty cashless readers and heavy traffic, especially during peak travel periods.

The senator’s call for enhanced services comes as a response to the TRB’s approval of toll rate increases, signaling the need for operators to prioritize improving overall service quality for motorists.
