Karylle and Zsa Zsa Padilla Marvel at ‘Sagala’ Experience in Intramuros

Karylle recently experienced being a “sagala” for the first time during a procession in Intramuros, Manila, alongside her mother Zsa Zsa Padilla. The event, known as “Santa Cruz de Mayo,” was organized by the Philippine Heritage Society on May 19.

In an interview, Karylle shared her excitement about participating in the cultural event, highlighting the significance of the tradition both culturally and spiritually. She reflected on her past involvement in cultural plays and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share this experience with her mother.

For the procession, Karylle portrayed Queen Helena, while Zsa Zsa Padilla took on the role of Reyna Emperatriz. Both donned creations by designer Lito Perez and wore crowns crafted by Gerry Sunga.

Padilla, who will celebrate her birthday on May 28, revealed that this was only her second time participating in a Santacruzan, with her last experience dating back to her teenage years. She expressed her enjoyment of the event and emphasized the importance of showcasing Filipino heritage to the younger generation.

The mother-daughter duo hopes that their participation in the Santa Cruz de Mayo procession will raise awareness about Filipino culture and traditions. Additionally, Padilla recently released a new single titled “Pag Tinadhana,” part of her EP available for digital streaming.

Looking ahead, Karylle is set to headline the Manila run of the Broadway hit “Little Shop of Horrors” alongside Sue Ramirez, Nyoy Volante, and Reb Atadero.
