Cainta, Rizal Government Commends Heroism of Slain Barangay Tanods

The local government of Cainta, Rizal has expressed its admiration for the heroism displayed by three barangay tanods who tragically lost their lives while responding to a disturbance in the area. The incident occurred on Saturday, August 26, when a man went on a shooting spree, causing chaos in the community.

The trio has been identified as Romeo Cortez, Ronnie Gonzalez, and Roberto Donor, all members of the Barangay Public Safety Office (BPSO). Cainta Mayor Elen Nieto paid tribute to their bravery and service to the town through a heartfelt message on her social media page. Nieto’s gratitude was echoed by Administrator Johnielle Keith Nieto, who emphasized the sacrifice made by the fallen tanods.

The three tanods had raced to the Greenland Subdivision in Barangay San Juan after receiving a distress call from a neighbor who had been assaulted by the suspect, identified as James Jazmines, 68. Sadly, upon their arrival, the tanods were met with gunfire, resulting in their deaths. A neighborhood security guard named Bernard Sales was also fatally shot during the incident.

In light of this tragedy, Mayor Nieto called on residents to commemorate the fallen tanods, particularly as the country celebrated National Heroes Day on August 28. The local government has pledged financial support to the families left behind by the victims.

According to a report from the Rizal Police Provincial Office, two additional barangay peacekeepers were present at the scene but managed to escape unharmed. When the police arrived to apprehend the suspect, they too faced gunshots, with one officer, Cpl. Glen Isagon, sustaining injuries. Despite the efforts of negotiators to calm Jazmines, he persisted in shooting at the officers, leading to a confrontation that resulted in his death.

In a chilling account, other barangay tanods revealed that they were unable to reach the three victims due to Jazmines’ continuous gunfire. Their brave attempts to rescue their fallen comrades were thwarted by the suspect’s aggression.

Barangay San Juan officials have provided assurances to the families of the deceased that they will receive financial assistance during this difficult time.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who selflessly serve their communities in the pursuit of peace and order. The local government and residents of Cainta, Rizal mourn the loss of these three brave individuals and will forever remember their unwavering dedication.
