Google pledges increased ad transparency in response to new EU regulations

Google has announced that it will provide more information on targeted advertisements and give researchers greater access to data on how its products work in order to comply with the European Union’s new online content rules. The rules, known as the Digital Services Act (DSA), place stricter requirements on major tech companies, including Google, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Twitter, and others, to tackle child sexual abuse material and disinformation.

The DSA also mandates increased transparency on algorithmic processes, bots, and targeted advertisements, as well as the removal of illegal and counterfeit products from platforms. In response, Google will expand its Ads Transparency Center and provide additional information on targeting for ads served in the European Union.

The company will also increase data access for researchers and update its reporting and appeals processes. Additionally, Google plans to roll out a new Transparency Center to provide users with information about its policies on a product-by-product basis.
