Boat Explosion in Panatag Injures 2 Filipino Fishermen

Chinese vessels attempted to block a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel from rescuing eight Filipino fishermen near Panatag Shoal on Saturday. The incident involved the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy 572 and China Coast Guard (CCG) 3105, but they allowed the PCG to proceed upon learning of the rescue mission. PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Armand Balilo emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety in emergencies and maintaining diplomatic communication. The PCG successfully rescued the fishermen, two of whom suffered burns from their boat’s engine explosion. The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) called for the government to protect Filipino fishermen in the West Philippine Sea. Fishers’ groups also requested Philippine Navy and PCG escort for security in the area.
