Alabastro, former editor of Inquirer and journalist, dies at 83



Prominent journalist and former Philippine Daily Inquirer editor Ruben Alabastro, known for his love of the craft, passed away at the age of 83. His daughter, Rachel Alabastro-Federez, confirmed the news on Friday in a Facebook post. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.

Alabastro had a distinguished career that spanned decades, starting as a correspondent for Agence France-Presse and later working for news wire agencies like United Press International, Associated Press, and Reuters. He joined the Inquirer as an editor in 2004.

Aside from his work in journalism, Alabastro co-edited the book “The Boys from the Barracks: The Philippine Military After Edsa,” which explored the military’s role and transformation post the 1986 People Power Revolution.

Colleagues and friends remembered Alabastro as a legendary journalist with impeccable attention to detail and a talent for storytelling. Tributes poured in for the veteran journalist, celebrating his dedication to accuracy, fairness, and impartiality.

The wake for Alabastro will be held at the St. Luke Room of Loyola Memorial Chapel in Guadalupe, Makati, as per his daughter Rachel. Viewing will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
