AFP Chief Warns Against Disinformation Campaigns
Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner issued a strong warning on Friday regarding the increasing spread of disinformation campaigns targeting the military and the government. The aim of these campaigns is to undermine the public’s trust in these institutions.
Brawner emphasized that these efforts are intended to create panic, sow division, and divert attention away from important issues. He urged the public to be vigilant and critical of the information they encounter and share.
The AFP chief highlighted that disinformation not only distorts the truth but also weakens the unity of the nation, leaving it susceptible to external threats that can jeopardize national security and stability. He encouraged people to verify sources and rely on credible and official channels for information.
Brawner assured Filipinos that the AFP remains committed to its duty of protecting the nation and supporting the peace and security agenda of the government. He called on every Filipino to join in fostering solidarity and resilience against those seeking to weaken the country’s resolve.
Earlier in the week, the military advised the public on the importance of verifying information and providing context before sharing it. This advisory came after a misleading photo circulated online, depicting a Philippine Navy helicopter dropping supplies on BRP Sierra Madre at Ayungin Shoal. Col. Xerxes Trinidad clarified that the photo was from a previous mission and not related to any current events.
Overall, Brawner’s warning serves as a reminder for the public to be cautious and discerning when consuming and sharing information, especially in the age of rampant disinformation.
