Vatican ambassador emphasizes the importance of following international rules

In a recent gathering at Malacañang, President Marcos and Papal Nuncio Archbishop Charles Brown emphasized the importance of respecting international law. Marcos underscored the Filipino people’s duty to defend the country from any threats that may cross the “red lines.”

During the Independence Day celebration, Brown, the dean of the diplomatic corps, expressed concern about the current global polarization, likening it to the time when former president Diosdado Macapagal proposed changing the date of Independence Day. He urged for dialogue to address conflicts and avoid escalations.

Marcos, in his speech, reiterated the Philippines’ commitment to an independent foreign policy based on peace and national interest. He highlighted the country’s support for the rule of law and the UN Charter in its international engagements.

The gathering also addressed economic concerns, with Marcos acknowledging the challenges posed by global inflation. Despite this, he noted that the Philippines has managed to keep inflation within a manageable level, maintaining a favorable credit rating as an investment destination.

Meanwhile, in the West Philippine Sea, the Philippine Coast Guard raised the country’s flag at the BRP Teresa Magbanua amid the presence of Chinese vessels. The Fishers’ group reported intensified bullying by the Chinese Coast Guard, prompting calls for group sailing to ensure safety.

To address the escalating tensions, local maritime agencies have ramped up patrols in the area. The Philippine Navy, along with the Coast Guard and BFAR, have increased their presence to monitor activities, particularly after China conducted military drills in the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone.

The fight for Philippine territory in the West Philippine Sea continues, with the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency emphasizing the country’s legitimate claims. Despite regional implications, NICA Chief Ricardo de Leon assured that the government prioritizes dialogue and upholding international law to address disputes with China.

Furthermore, the United States reaffirmed its commitment to defending the Philippines under the Mutual Defense Treaty. Secretary Antony Blinken underscored the strong alliance between the two countries and their shared values in upholding international law and promoting human rights for a safer and more prosperous world.
