PNP reports 21% increase in cybercrimes during first quarter of 2024

Filipinos are losing around P1 billion per year in online scams, as reported by the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC). According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), cybercrimes have increased by 21.8 percent in the first quarter of this year compared to 2023. The most common cases include online selling scams, credit card fraud, and investment scams.

The PNP attributes the rise in cybercrimes to increased online activity, sophisticated tactics by cybercriminals, and a lack of awareness among the public. To address this issue, the PNP is implementing increased checkpoints and patrols, and their “cyber cops” will focus on combating internet crimes.

Furthermore, PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil announced a heightened effort to combat cybercrimes, with a focus on allocating more resources and enhancing capabilities to address the growing threat. The public is encouraged to report any instances of police abuse through the provided hotlines: PNP Hotline 117 or 911, and Anti-Cybercrime Group (02) 414-1560.
