Pagasa predicts heat index of over 42°C in 37 locations on May 17

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has warned that the heat index is expected to reach 42 to 45 degrees Celsius in 37 areas across the country on Friday, May 17.

Areas such as Dagupan City, Sangley Point, San Jose, and Zamboanga City may experience a scorching 45-degree Celsius heat. Meanwhile, temperatures up to 44 degrees Celsius are likely in places like Bacnotan, Roxas City, and Iloilo City.

Pagasa explained that the heat index combines high humidity with abnormally high temperatures, which reduces the body’s ability to cool itself. Once the heat index reaches 42 to 51 degrees Celsius, it falls into the “danger category” as it increases the risk of heat-related illnesses.

To avoid such illnesses, the Department of Health advises the public to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, limit outdoor activities, and protect themselves from the sun. Additionally, Pagasa mentioned that places like Baguio City and La Trinidad will experience lower heat indices on Friday.

With the intense heat expected, it is crucial for individuals to take precautions and stay safe during this period.
