Filipino Performer Takes West End by Storm

Iroy Abesamis, a homegrown Filipino performer, is currently captivating audiences in the cast of “Guys and Dolls” at the Bridge Theatre in London. Abesamis, who is living his dream, shared in an interview over WhatsApp that while he has always loved performing, he never received proper training in musical theater. He recounted his journey from studying Filipino folk dances to joining theater shows in Manila to now gracing the West End stage.

His presence in “Guys and Dolls” marks his fifth production, following his debut in the UK and International tour of “Miss Saigon” in 2017. Abesamis also expressed admiration for seasoned actress Joanna Ampil, whom he worked with in “South Pacific,” citing her talent and generosity as an inspiration for him.

In a recent email interview, Abesamis shared insights and reflections on his theater experiences, including his favorite productions, the challenges of being a swing in “Guys and Dolls,” and advice for aspiring performers. He emphasized the importance of preparation, perseverance, and staying true to one’s dreams in the face of rejection.

Looking ahead, Abesamis is hopeful for more opportunities in the theater world, with shows like “Wicked” and “Jesus Christ Superstar” on his wish list. Despite the physical challenges of his profession, the Filipino performer remains determined to excel in his craft and represent his country with pride on the international stage.
