Japan criticizes China for impeding freedom of navigation

The foreign ministry of Japan reiterated its serious concern over increasing tension in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) yesterday. Japan expressed opposition to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force and condemned the use of Coast Guard and maritime militia vessels in the South China Sea.

Japan also praised the Philippines for consistently complying with the Arbitral Tribunal’s award regarding disputes with China in the South China Sea. The arbitral award is final and legally binding under UNCLOS, and Japan hopes that compliance will lead to a peaceful settlement of disputes in the region.

The United States Department of Defense joined in condemning China for intentionally ramming Philippine resupply ships in the WPS, leading to injuries and damage. The Pentagon labeled China’s behavior as provocative and reckless, emphasizing the importance of standing with the Philippines in such situations.

The US and the Philippines have a Mutual Defense Treaty that obligates them to help defend each other in major conflicts. State Department officials reaffirmed the treaty’s commitment to protecting Philippine maritime claims and the armed forces in the South China Sea.
