Former Deputy Speaker Lito Atienza cautions against the approval of divorce bill.

Former House Deputy Speaker Lito Atienza has issued a warning to senators regarding the approval of the divorce bill, stating that it would violate the Philippine Constitution. Atienza emphasized the need for lawmakers to adhere to the Constitution and not violate it.

He pointed out that there are existing laws that address issues such as violence against women and children, which proponents of the divorce bill cite as reasons for its approval. Atienza stated that abusive husbands and fathers can already be prosecuted under current legislation.

Atienza also criticized Congressmen who celebrated the bill’s approval, claiming that they were not only violating God’s law but also the Constitution. He threatened to challenge the legality of the bill’s approval all the way to the Supreme Court, pointing out irregularities in the voting process.

The House of Representatives approved the divorce bill before adjourning its second regular session, initially recording 126 votes in favor. However, the House later clarified that 131 members voted for the bill, not 126.

Meanwhile, a survey conducted by Senate President Pro Tempore showed a close divide between supporters and opponents of the controversial divorce bill in the upper chamber. Atienza’s strong stance against the bill reflects the ongoing debate and uncertainty surrounding its implementation.
