DTI’s Price Monitoring and Quality Checking Activities Include Mark Villar’s Participation

Senator Mark Villar Joins DTI in Monitoring Product Prices and Standards

In an effort to ensure adherence to Philippine standards and quality regulations, Senator Mark Villar recently participated in the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) regular price monitoring activities. As the chairman of the Senate Committee on Trade, Commerce, and Entrepreneurship, Villar joined DTI officials in inspecting the prices of construction materials, furniture, and fixtures.

During the inspection, products such as light fixtures, tiles, plywood, and appliances were closely scrutinized to determine their compliance with the Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS). Villar expressed his satisfaction with the merchants and retailers, highlighting their compliance with the standards set by the BPS. Furthermore, the senator and the DTI officials tested the use of QR codes attached to price tags to confirm compliance with standards.

By scanning the QR code using an app, consumers can access technical details about the product, including the brand name, reference standard, and PS mark with the license number, if applicable. This added feature not only ensures compliance but also enhances transparency for consumers.

Apart from assessing compliance with BPS standards, Villar also checked whether the products bore the PS or Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) stickers. These stickers serve as evidence of compliance with DTI’s requirements.

As the holiday season approaches, the senator emphasized the importance of consistent price monitoring. Villar stressed that it is vital to monitor not only home improvement equipment and fixtures, but also the prices of essential items such as food products and flowers to ensure fairness to consumers.

During the monitoring activities, Villar and Assistant Secretary Jean Pacheco, the officer-in-charge of DTI’s Consumer Protection Group, called on the public to report any non-compliant merchants or vendors. The DTI provides multiple channels for complaints, including the hotline 1384 and the agency’s social media accounts.

Senator Mark Villar’s active participation in DTI’s price monitoring activities demonstrates his commitment to protecting consumer rights and ensuring fair business practices. By working closely with government agencies, he aims to create an environment that promotes both quality and affordability for Filipino consumers.
