DiCaprio Joins Effort to Protect Masungi

A Hollywood actor has expressed support for the Masungi Geopark Project and called on President Marcos to intervene in the planned cancellation of an agreement between the government and Masungi Georeserve Foundation Inc. (MGFI) to protect the area.

In an Instagram post, the actor emphasized that the conservation efforts at Masungi serve as a reminder that the Philippines can lead in sustainability, eco-tourism, biodiversity protection, and climate action.

The actor also urged local rangers to join him in calling on President Marcos to continue protecting Masungi, as the cancellation of the agreement could expose the area to mining, logging, and illegal development.

Despite the actor’s plea, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) reiterated its plan to cancel the 2017 memorandum of agreement. The DENR emphasized that while they appreciate international concern for the Philippine environment, all entities are bound by the law.

Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga informed the Senate that the Masungi Geopark Project was void from the start. The DENR declared that the Filipino people own the area occupied by MGFI and that the operation of resort venues charging the public for tours, meetings, and weddings is non-compliant with Philippine laws.
