Chinese government challenges aircraft of visiting senators to Pag-asa Island

In a bold move, Senate leaders were challenged by China to leave the Philippine territory during their visit to Pag-asa Island in Kalayaan, Palawan. The communication from China was received even before Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, Senate Majority Floor Leader Joel Villanueva, and Sen. JV Ejercito landed on the island, as reported by News5.

Zubiri, in a defiant response, asserted that Pag-asa Island belongs to the Republic of the Philippines and not to China. He emphasized that the territory has been part of the Philippines long before the arrival of Magellan.

The purpose of the Senate leaders’ visit to Pag-asa Island was to witness the groundbreaking ceremony for two projects included in the 2024 national budget. These projects include a rural health unit with basic laboratory facilities, a birthing unit, and barracks for Philippine Navy personnel stationed on the island.

Zubiri highlighted the importance of investing in the infrastructure of Pag-asa Island, stating that it is crucial for the security of the West Philippine Sea. Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, who was also present during the visit, noted the presence of 22 Chinese militia vessels near the island.
