Senators continue pursuit of Guo despite absence

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) has taken steps to revoke the “irregular” birth certificate of Alice Guo, the suspended mayor of Bamban, Tarlac. During a Senate hearing on Philippine offshore gaming operators (Pogos), Senator Risa Hontiveros presented documents from the National Bureau of Investigation that raised suspicions about Guo assuming the identity of another woman with the same name.

The NBI documents revealed that two individuals named “Alice Leal Guo” shared the same birth date and province of birth. One of the documents contained a photo of Guo, while the other showed a person who looked entirely different from the mayor.

Guo, who is facing a complaint for qualified human trafficking, was unable to attend the hearing but sent a letter citing health concerns. It is alleged that Guo, originally Guo Hua Ping, a Chinese national, illegally obtained Filipino citizenship and assumed the identity of a Filipino citizen.

PSA National Statistician Marizza Grande stated that the agency requested the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) to file a petition to cancel Guo’s birth certificate. The late registration of Guo’s birth in 2005, 19 years after her alleged birth date, was deemed irregular.

During the hearing, discrepancies were also noted in the variations of Guo’s declared birth mother’s name in her bank accounts. Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) Director Emmett Rodion Manantan pointed out several different names used by Guo, raising further suspicions about her true identity.

Justice Undersecretary Nicholas Felix Ty mentioned that Guo may face deportation if the court grants the petition to cancel her birth certificate. The legal process to revoke Guo’s birth certificate is ongoing, but she cannot be deported until the criminal cases against her are resolved.
