Sara Sparks Political Conversation One Week After Leaving Cabinet

Less than a week after abruptly leaving her Cabinet position, Vice President Sara Duterte has started to discuss politics. During a “Pride Reception” event at Limketkai Luxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City, Duterte revealed that her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, and brothers Paolo and Sebastian are considering running in the 2025 Senate race.

Paolo currently serves as a representative of Davao City’s first district, while Sebastian is the city’s chief executive. Duterte also mentioned her mother’s suggestion that Sebastian run for senator in 2025 and then aim for the presidency in 2028. Following her mother’s advice, Duterte plans to return to Davao City to run for mayor.

Despite initially avoiding questions about her Cabinet departure, Duterte emphasized the importance of a smooth transition at the Department of Education. She announced her resignation as Education Secretary, effective July 19, to facilitate a 30-day transition period. Duterte also stepped down as vice chair of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict.

Critics like Antonio Montalvan have interpreted the Duterte family’s political plans as an effort to maintain power and influence. However, Manny Jaudian, acting Secretary General of PDP-Laban, suggested that Duterte may just be testing the political waters as parties gear up for the upcoming midterm polls. Jaudian questioned the viability of the Duterte family’s Senate bids and speculated on potential shifts in Davao City’s leadership dynamics.

Overall, observers anticipate the Vice President forming her own senatorial slate, but the crowded field of candidates, including former heavyweight senators and newcomers, adds complexity to the political landscape.
