Filipino Comedians Offer Perspectives on Cancel Culture in Today’s Comedy

Filipino comedians Jerald Napoles, Tuesday Vargas, and Pepe Herrera shared their insights on cancel culture and its impact on comedy in today’s entertainment scene.

Cancel culture, as defined by many dictionaries, refers to the practice of canceling or boycotting individuals or groups due to perceived unacceptable behavior or stance. This phenomenon has been prevalent in online platforms, where people actively show their disapproval by shunning or criticizing the canceled individual or group.

Jerald Napoles acknowledged the challenges faced by comedians in the current landscape. He expressed concerns about whether people can still appreciate comedy given the heightened sensitivity and criticism surrounding jokes and comedic content.

During a press conference for “Last One Laughing Philippines,” Jerald, along with his girlfriend Kim Molina and host Vice Ganda, discussed the difficulties of pleasing audiences in today’s environment.

Premiering on July 4 on Prime Video, the competition series will feature 10 Filipino comedians, including Rufa Mae Quinto, Victor Anastacio, Jayson Gainza, Chad Kinis, Negi, and Empoy Marquez. The show aims to challenge comedians to withhold their laughter and win a cash prize.

Tuesday Vargas emphasized the need for “thinking actors” who can entertain while also engaging viewers in meaningful discussions. She praised the platform provided by “LOL Philippines” and appreciated the opportunity to showcase brave and courageous comedy despite the constraints of cancel culture.

Pepe Herrera viewed the silver lining in cancel culture, highlighting how it prompts discussions on differing opinions and perspectives. He believes that the phenomenon encourages people to examine and respect varying points of view, leading to a richer and more inclusive dialogue.

Overall, the comedians participating in the show see it as an avenue for learning and growth, both for themselves and their audience. They believe that by navigating the complexities of cancel culture and comedy, they can create engaging and impactful content that sparks conversations and fosters understanding among viewers.
