Philippines, China discuss maritime communication and cooperation

Manila and Beijing have recently engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing maritime communication mechanisms and fostering dialogue between their coast guards, according to the foreign ministry of China.

The two countries reached an agreement during the 9th Meeting of their Bilateral Consultation Mechanism on the South China Sea, which took place in Manila. Topics of discussion included the situation in the South China Sea, with a focus on managing issues at Ayungin Shoal.

In addition to improving communication mechanisms, both nations agreed to collaborate on marine science, technology, and environmental protection efforts.

While China has been accused of instigating conflicts at sea, it has urged the Philippines to refrain from maritime infringements and provocations. China proposed joint management of the situation at Ayungin Shoal to ease tensions and restore stability in the China-Philippines relationship.

The United States has voiced support for actions that de-escalate tensions in the South China Sea. However, the U.S. remains skeptical about China’s intentions, citing recent actions at Ayungin Shoal as examples of destabilizing behavior.

In response to China’s deployment of a large coast guard vessel to Ayungin Shoal, the Philippines emphasized its commitment to protecting its interests and sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea.

Experts have advised caution in dealing with China’s overtures for peace, citing previous instances where Chinese actions contradicted their stated goals. Despite some signs of de-escalation, concerns remain about ongoing tensions in the region.
