Comelec declares 10 Taguig barangays ineligible to vote for House representative in 2025 elections

Residents of 10 barangays in Taguig who were recently designated as voters by a Supreme Court ruling will be able to participate in the 2025 midterm elections, the Commission on Elections announced on Tuesday. However, they will not be able to vote for their congressman due to the uncertainty of which district they belong to.

The affected voters come from barangays Pembo, Comembo, Cembo, South Cembo, West Rembo, East Rembo, Pitogo, Rizal, Northside, and Southside. Comelec Chairperson George Garcia explained that the commission cannot determine on its own which district the new Taguig voters officially belong to, as that power lies with Congress.

Garcia stated that the voters can still participate in voting for national, mayoralty, vice mayoralty, and city council positions. If a new law is passed to abolish Makati’s second district and establish a third district in Taguig, Comelec can adjust the ballot accordingly.

The Supreme Court ruled in April 2023 that Taguig has jurisdiction over the 729-hectare Bonifacio Global City and the 10 barangays in Makati’s second district. The Comelec is prepared to make changes as necessary to accommodate any shifts in district boundaries.
