AI Knee Replacement Robot Developed in India



Indian medical company Meril has introduced an AI-powered robot designed to assist in knee replacement research. The robot, named Misso, offers tools that enable surgeons to perform more accurate cuts and installations of prosthetics, reducing the risk of potential complications.

According to India Times, over 250,000 Indians undergo knee replacement surgery annually, and Misso’s technology could help hospitals treat these patients more safely and efficiently. The device’s features include sub-millimeter-accurate cutting, precise alignment, and computer-assisted navigation for shaping knee joint parts.

Misso customizes procedures based on patients’ 3D CT scans to ensure proper installation of the prosthetic knee and minimize the risk of infection. The robot also has safety features that allow it to monitor the procedure and halt its operations if its tools come into contact with unrelated body parts or objects.

Meril claims that Misso occupies minimal space, making it suitable for smaller healthcare facilities, and reduces knee replacement planning time by approximately 83%. The company aims to make knee replacements more affordable and accessible, with a goal of lowering costs by 66%.

The potential widespread use of this technology extends beyond India, as other countries may adopt similar tools in their healthcare facilities. Interesting Engineering reports that 22% to 39% of the Indian population suffers from severe osteoarthritis, highlighting the significant need for advancements in knee replacement procedures.

With subsidiaries in 35 countries, Meril’s innovative technology could have a global impact on improving knee replacement surgeries and making them more accessible to a larger population. This advancement in healthcare technology may soon reach countries like the Philippines, where millions of individuals are affected by osteoarthritis.
