AFP requests additional information from Imee Marcos regarding ‘hypersonic missile’ threat claim

The Armed Forces of the Philippines expressed readiness to coordinate with Sen. Imee Marcos following her claims that China is planning to send hypersonic missiles to specific areas in the Philippines. The AFP stated that they will seek more details from Marcos to ensure the nation’s security.

Marcos alleged in a video posted on her Facebook page on July 1 that China intends to target 25 areas in the Philippines with hypersonic missiles, citing concerns over the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement sites that allow the US access to Philippine military bases. She also mentioned that the US has indicated it cannot counter these missiles, heightening her concerns.

Despite these allegations, the Philippines and China have agreed to deescalate tensions in the West Philippine Sea during a recent meeting between their foreign affairs representatives. Both countries emphasized the importance of continued dialogue based on mutual respect to maintain peace and stability in the region.

The Philippine Navy reported that Chinese vessels have started to reduce their presence in the West Philippine Sea. Hypersonic missiles are known for their high speed, moving at least Mach 5 or faster, which could pose a significant threat if deployed.
