Tolentino thrilled to receive ACC Merit Award

POC President Vows to Boost Cycling After Receiving 2024 Merit Award

MANILA, Philippines — The president of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, has pledged to elevate the status of cycling in the country following his receipt of the 2024 Merit Award at the Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC) Congress in Kazakhstan.

During the event held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Almaty last Thursday, Tolentino expressed his gratitude for the recognition from the ACC. He emphasized that the award serves as inspiration to further develop the sport of cycling in the Philippines.

Tolentino, who is also the president of PhilCycling, the national sports association for cycling, led a 22-athlete team to the ACC Championships for Road, marking the largest Philippine delegation since 1995.

“I am truly thankful to the ACC for acknowledging PhilCycling’s efforts to advance our sport in the country,” Tolentino stated.

Under Tolentino’s leadership at PhilCycling, significant progress has been made since 2005. As the former mayor of Tagaytay City, he spearheaded the inclusion of BMX racing as a demonstration sport, eventually leading to its status as a medal sport at the UCI-standard BMX track during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
