Sofitel shuts down due to safety concerns after 51 years

Luxury hotel Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila to close doors on July 1

The iconic Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila, nestled in Pasay City, will be shutting down its operations starting July 1. Esteban Peña Sy, president of Philippine Plaza Holdings Inc., the luxury hotel’s owner, confirmed the closure in a recent phone interview.

The decision to close the hotel, which has been in operation for 51 years, is primarily due to safety concerns related to essential equipment such as water pipes and electrical wires. Fire incidents at the hotel this year, totaling to 27, prompted the management to prioritize the safety of guests and employees.

Sy assured the hotel’s staff, including its labor union, that they will receive generous separation packages and opportunities for training and employment at other properties managed by Accor, the multinational hospitality firm overseeing Sofitel.

Contrary to earlier reports, Sy clarified that the closure of Sofitel is not related to the reclamation projects in Manila Bay or any issues with the hotel’s landlord, the Government Service Insurance System. The hotel’s closure is deemed necessary to prevent any casualties and ensure the well-being of all stakeholders.

While the future of Sofitel remains uncertain, Accor described it as an iconic luxury resort with stunning views of Manila Bay sunsets. The hotel has been a preferred destination for heads of state, celebrities, and global corporations for almost five decades.

Despite the closure, Sofitel’s legacy as a top choice for luxury accommodation and memorable celebrations will continue to be remembered by its loyal patrons and clients.
