Reclaiming PH’s Standing as Basketball Powerhouse in Asia

Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, chairperson of the Committee on Sports, leads senators in checking the preparations for the hosting and the readiness of the national team who will represent the country in the 2023 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup.

Presiding over the hearing of the committee Monday, September 12, 2022, Go noted that the Philippines was considered the powerhouse of Asia in basketball. In fact, he said, since 1989, the Philippines has consistently won the gold medal in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, except in the 2021 SEA Games where the national team suffered a “surprising loss” to Indonesia. “As we host the 2023 World Cup, we must take the opportunity to show the world that we are the sports powerhouse in Asia. We have what we call homecourt advantage in 2023,” Go said.

Go authored Senate Proposed Resolution No. 83 to study the ways to support the Gilas Pilipinas men’s basketball team and to ensure optimal performance in future international sports competitions and to protect the welfare of Filipino athletes. (Albert Calvelo/ Senate PRIB)
