Manila Water maintains compliance with wastewater quality regulations

Manila Water Achieves 100% Compliance in Wastewater Effluent Quality

Manila Water, the East Zone concessionaire, has successfully met the standards set by government bodies for effluent or wastewater treatment. In the month of April, Manila Water scored 100% on its wastewater effluent quality compliance scorecard, surpassing the target of 95.00%.

According to the scorecard set by the MWSS Regulatory Office, the compliance was based on the General Effluent Standards outlined in the Wastewater Discharge Permits issued to treatment facilities by either the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (EMB-DENR) or the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA).

Under the DENR’s Updated General Effluent Standards, wastewater treatment plants are required to produce “Class C” effluent that eliminates bio-nutrients such as ammonia and phosphorus, making it safe for water recycling and discharge to water bodies.

In line with its sustainability agenda and regulatory compliance, Manila Water is investing in new infrastructure and upgrading its wastewater facilities. The company has allocated funds for various projects, including the construction of sewer replacement packages in Quezon City and sewer network expansions in Mandaluyong and Taguig.

Currently, Manila Water operates 24 sewage treatment plants and 2 septage treatment plants in the East Zone, demonstrating its commitment to environmental protection and water quality management.
